HCVA entries for the 2nd Rally for the Ages

The HCVA are proud to have entered 5 cars with 10 young competitors into the 2nd annual Hero ERA Rally for the Ages. The rally is free to enter providing that the driver and navigator combined are below the age of 70. It's a brilliant event to introduce the next generation to classic motorsport and the enjoyment of classic cars in a fun, challenging environment.

The HCVA entries included two classic Minis, a Triumph Dolomite, a Caterham 21 and an MG TF. In total there were 65 cars entered ranging from a 1924 Bentley 3/4.5 litre to a Lotus Elise - and everything inbetween!

The competitors took on a 100 mile route around the Oxfordshire countryside with a mixture of high speed tests and regularity sections. The rally started and finished at Bicester Heritage and the airfield there provided a perfect location for the high speed test routes comprised of lots of cones to successfully navigate.

  • Filling up with Sustain Classic Super 80 and ready to compete!

  • A wide and eclectic mix of entrants took part, ranging from classic Minis through to a 1924 Bentley.

  • The event was a masterpiece of organisation once again and a huge amount of fun was had by all.

The regularity element to the open road sections meant that navigators had a significantly harder job than the drivers. Aside from working out directions they also had to ensure that the car was maintaining the correct speed to minimise penalties when reaching each timing point - no mean feat!

Sustain Fuels were offering a special deal for competitors to run on their Sustain Classic Super 80 sustainable fuel which was very popular amongst competitors. Dan Lawson, our Press and Communications Officer, had his first experience using sustainable fuel in the Mini which went brilliantly - and clearly shows that this is a fuel for the future of environmentally aware classic motoring.

One of the HCVA entries even managed to take home some silverware as Roland and Tamzin Thomas, pictured with their Green Mini 1275GT, finished the event in a highly impressive 2nd place overall.

Most importantly all of the young people that we spoke to had a brilliant day out and would love to explore other historic motorsport events.

“A resounding success and judging by the smiles on the faces of so many young people, you can see they have had a happy day out. There have been so many parents with daughters, sons, friends, sisters and brothers, all in a great broad church of cars from a 1924 Bentley and 1929 Ford Model A to modern cars. Hopefully many more youngsters will be converted to historic motorsport, it has been joyous.”
