Sustainable Liquid Fuels Round Table
The HCVA considers Sustainable Liquid Fuels - petrol and diesel made from waste, and/or via Carbon Capture, and using clean electricity in their manufacture - to be a vital piece of the puzzle to ensure that Historic motoring can continue indefinitely in a Net Zero world.
Several companies are already engaged in the development and manufacture of these fuels, and they are becoming increasingly available 'in the wild' to early adopters among the Historic community. Importantly, all initiatives in the Historic sector are on a completely voluntary, non-mandated, basis - illustrating our belief that Historic and Classic vehicles can take the lead even on sensitive environmental issues.
HCVA Affiliate, the Goodwood Road Racing Company, is leading the way in Historic motorsport globally with two grids successfully competing on Sustainable Fuels at their recent Members' Meeting, and from this year's Revival, ALL grids will be powered using renewable liquid fuels: A first anywhere in the world.
HCVA continues to lobby hard not only for sympathetic tax and regulatory treatment, but also for the emerging Sustainable Fuel industry itself to standardise its use of product terminology and sustainability claims, so that in future these important fuels are taken as seriously by legislators as Battery-Electric is today. As always, our belief is that by acting collaboratively industry participants can achieve more than we can acting in isolation.
As part of our thought-leadership role, HCVA is organising its first Sustainable Fuels Round Table at Bicester later this month - a select meeting of some of the most notable minds in Sustainable Liquid Fuels, intended to address many of the issues facing the industry - from taxation to chemistry, and from terminology to the challenges of quantifying Greenhouse Gas reduction measurements.
To be held under Chatham House Rules to encourage open discussion among competing manufacturers and subject experts, we expect a day of vibrant discussion and we aim to reach agreement on several key issues facing the industry.
Alongside work already completed on the electrification of Historic vehicles, the HCVA can be rightly proud that it is increasingly seen as a sustainability leader!
